Japanese Mayonnaise & the 3-Month Game Challenge

So…Japanese mayonnaise?

kewpie1

Japanese mayonnaise.

kewpie2

Mmm, Kewpie brand mayo. Apparently this shit’s so good someone went so far as to open a restaurant that consists of nothing but mayonnaise-based dishes.  (Tokyo’s Mayonnaise Kitchen, check it out.)  On top of that there’s a devoted group of mayo fanatics with their own adorable nickname: mayora.

People get fixated on the weirdest things.

As seen above, the bottle is pretty big. It towers over most of my PVC figures in height.

kewpie3

My god. It’s beautiful. Look at all of that creamy goodness. I sure hope I like it because that is a crapload of mayo.

This stuff isn’t necessarily hard to find, but as someone who’s rarely lived in areas with large Asian populations AND someone who doesn’t frequent Asian markets, I’ve never seen it in person until just recently.

kewpie5

Initial tasting (by itself) was “eh”. Not bad by any means, but nothing that made me see why it has a fanatical following. For the second tasting I had it with some salmon (pictured above). How was it?

Absolutely delicious.

Later on I had it with a cod fillet. Even better! Mayo and fish is apparently a match made in heaven.

hijikatamayo

Inspired by this unfortunate soul, who can’t eat anything unless it’s completely drenched in mayonnaise, I decided to try it with…

kewpie4

…plain white rice.

If my latin parents saw me pouring mayo on my rice I’m sure they’d both disown me.

kewpie6

Mmm, rich and creamy rice with a subtle hint of MSG-loaded goop. I’m surprised it works so well.

Ah, I’m a fan. I was kind of worried about not liking Kewpie, which would’ve been a shame considering a lone bottle is $7 at the market, but those fears have been put to rest. I probably won’t go as far as making a margarita or creamy soup with it (again, please refer to Tokyo’s Mayonnaise Kitchen), but I’ll definitely use it with rice and meat.

NOW ON TO SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!

Inspired by Game Center CX’s Chief Arino and my own need to cut spending, I’m going to start up a “Three Month Gaming Challenge”. The challenge? Don’t buy any new games for three months, AND beat twelve games in that time.

It’s been my ultimate goal for a while to knock out my game backlog, but the continuing purchasing of new games has…uh…kinda hindered that goal.

SO NOW IT’S TIME TO GET SERIOUS!

Not buying any new games for three months will be a bit harsh…I really wanted to get the Zone of the Enders HD Collection, Atelier Ayesha, Atelier Meruru, Pokemon White 2, Lollipop Chainsaw, etc. Ugh…one day.

SO, wipe out twelve games in three months. Which twelve are I’m going to take on?

- (Wii) Super Mario Galaxy
- (Wii) The Last Story
- (DS) Kirby Mass Attack
- (DS) Freshly-Picked Tingle’s Rosy Rupeeland
- (3DS) Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward
- (GBA) Sonic Advance
- (GBA) Drill Dozer
- (PS1) Rising Zan: The Samurai Gunman
- (PS3) Ni no Kuni
- (PSP) Fate/EXTRA
- (PSP) Growlanser IV: Wayfarer of Time
- (Steam) Dear Esther

This should be doable, considering half of these games I’ve already made progress on and Dear Esther is pathetically short (but has high replay value). My main goal is to knock out 11 games by the second month, leaving the ENTIRE third month devoted solely to the monster that is Ni no Kuni.

Can it be done? We’ll see…

  1. As soon as I saw the mayonnaise tag on my reader, I instantly knew, “This post will suck if it doesn’t have Hijikata in it”.

You do have him. Best post ever :D

As for your gaming backlog, good luck with that. You’d be better off trying to deal with an anime backlog than all that…I mean, how many hours will it take to beat all those games (And you have RPGs on your list. I mean come on now)

    • Thanks. Seeing as it’s Hijikata’s fault in the first place that I was even interested in Kewpie, I couldn’t make the post without referencing him.

As for the list, it’s very doable. Like I mentioned in the post, I’ve already made progress on most of the games on the list. Out of the RPGs listed, only Ni no Kuni is completely unplayed. (Hence the entire month devoted to it) I’m close to the end of Last Story, Fate/EXTRA and Growlanser. Just a matter of ending my laziness and actually finishing them.
