Roronoa Zoro

NAME: Roronoa Zoro
SERIES: One Piece
SCALE/CREATOR: 1/8, by MegaHouse
RELEASE DATE: January 2008

Long time no see! Let’s kick things off again with…a rare review of a MALE figure!

Moss head.

There are only three companies I know that consistently pump out male figures: Kotobukiya releases a lot of statues of American superheroes. Medicom releases a lot of dolls and action figures of guys from movies, anime and video games. Then there’s MegaHouse, that mainly releases popular male anime characters.

It’s a shame the figure doesn’t have Zoro’s green haramaki, but it does have his fancy earring.

This Zoro figure was originally released several years ago. The paint job was so-so and he had a clamp to hold him to his base. With the continued popularity of One Piece, MegaHouse went ahead and re-released the old PVC’s with improvements: Improved paint jobs, slightly altered sculpts, new box designs and peg bases.

Zoro is a master of a three sword style. One sword for each hand and one for his mouth.

MegaHouse’s figure these days tend to be of excellent quality, with Zoro being another strong addition to their library. There’s an impressive amount of detail in his delicious green hair and three sword hilts. The rest of him is really simple, though. He doesn’t even have his haramaki! Also, his hilariously grumpy scowl looks a little weird from some angles.

Zoro comes with three swords and a pair of goggles. The swords are connected together and placed on him via a peg in his waist. You can put the goggles on him by ripping off his head and placing them around his neck.

Paint-wise he looks good. Once again we see a use of different paints: metallic paint for the golden parts of his swords and matte painting for the rest of him. There’s also plenty of shading on his upper body…though absolutely none below the waist.

Now that 4Kids lost One Piece, maybe Viz will stop using ‘Zolo’…

Like all of MegaHouse’s One Piece figures Zoro comes on a transparent colored base displaying his name. It also features the name and Jolly Roger of his pirate crew.

OVERALL: 8/10

+ It’s a dude!
+ Excellent paint job and sculpt details

- No shading below the belt

Zoro’s a must have for any One Piece fan, or collector of rare male figures. He’s still in stock at several vendors but is starting to get scarce. If you want him, you’d better pick him up quickly! And don’t forget to get Luffy, Usopp, Sanji, Chopper, Franky, Brook, etc…
