Samus Aran

NAME: Samus Aran
SERIES: Metroid
SCALE/CREATOR: Non-scale, by First4Figures
RELEASE DATE: Spring? 2008

Well now, this is a rare sight. Here we have a figure of a woman who’s actually wearing a decent amount of clothing! My apologies to all of you who were expecting another titty-fest. Up for review today is the incredibly badass Samus Aran, one of the most famous female characters in gaming.

Someone’s about to get their head blown off.

It should also be noted that this fully-clad lady is the only figure in my possession that didn’t come from the happy lands of Japan or Hong Kong. Though I don’t recall if First4Figures is a United States or United Kingdom based company.

Despite wearing a full suit of armor, Samus is actually very flexible and agile. In fact, she could probably outrun AND out-bend you.

As mentioned earlier, this giant Samus is brought to us by First4Figures. This is a company specializing in video game characters. There are actually several Samus statues under their Metroid line including Phazon Suit (with LED lights!), Gravity Suit, and Zero Suit. There’s also a wicked model of Samus’ gunship. This figure, Varia Suit Samus, shows our favorite space pirate-blastin’ heroine in her most recognizable form.

The second most ridiculous pair of shoulder pads in the universe. First place goes to Qubeley of Gundam fame.

Samus is lovingly recreated in absurd amounts of resin. Just look at the amount of detail in her armor! To make things even more exciting, she looks like she’s about to kill someone. There aren’t any noticeable sculpt flaws that I can find. Excellent work!

I mean, honestly…who would wear such absurd shoulder pads? Just look at those things. You could fit young children in them.

The original prototype for this figure featured a matte finish. At some point they released more prototype shots that featured the metallic finish you see in the photos here. Not that the original matte looked bad, but Samus’ armor looks much much MUCH better when it’s incredibly shiny.

Samus is professionally painted with no notable flaws. Everything looks crisp and clean…and very shiny. The metallic orange and red on her armor are especially beautiful.

Here’s a nice shot for all you leg enthusiasts.

Samus herself doesn’t weight that much. Her base, however, can be used as a weapon in case of emergency. That thing is HEAVY. It’s very impressive, though. I’m used to getting simple plastic slabs with my figures, and here’s Samus with her awesome ten pound futuristic floor!

OVERALL: 10/10
The good news is this Samus figure is all sorts of awesome. The bad news is she’s sold out. Those of you looking for Varia Suit Samus are out of luck, but don’t despair! As of right now First4Figures should still have Gravity Suit Samus available. It’s just like the Varia Suit, except the orange parts are purple! There’s also this wicked awesome Phazon Suit version, which is black and dark gray with blue and red LED lights! I strongly recommend all of First4Figures products to Metroid fans.
